"In my world, helping someone write their story fulfills me. It’s one story closer to preserving the many histories people do not think are important, but that I KNOW are important. My heart glows when they receive their book and see their value.
When I die, I want to be remembered as a person who helped others preserve their many stories for their friends and family. I know how to write and love sharing my gift with others every day."
Veteran Stories, a service of Pocket Parks Publishing, came to life during an entrepreneurship conference with a room full of military spouses and veterans. The seminar leader asked me why I was not writing veteran stories, someone said they had some deployment journals, and everyone started passing their business cards to the back of the room where I was sitting. It was at that moment that I realized I had to do this.
My first client supplied me with rich journals of two of her many deployments. Through her journals, I took a journey from an early deployment at the beginnings of Operation Desert Storm to one of her last tours during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The changes she experienced, the thoughts that went through her mind -- all of it -- produced a fine manuscript that I turned into a paperback book she can now pass down to her family.
Through the Veteran Stories program, I can help veterans and military families share the journey with each other by capturing the stories on paper rather than keeping them inside their heads to be lost forever one day.
